Oak trees can be found throughout the Old Testament as a symbol for worldly strength and longevity. Jacob hid his family's idols and earrings under an oak that was near Shechem (Genesis 35:4). When Rebekah's nurse, Deborah died, they buried her body under an oak in Bethel and they named it Allonbachuth (35:8). In the days of the conquest, Joshua set up a great stone as a memorial underneath an oak tree (Joshua 24:26).
However, God prophesied through Isaiah to the wicked nation of Judah, "For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen. For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water" (Isaiah 1:29-30). We can appreciate the beauty of the mighty oak, but we must worship the Creator first. All glory should go to God!
